The Kennedy Park Project

The Revitalization of Kennedy Park began in 2008, when the Municipality of Trent Hills received a Municipal Fund grant from the Community Foundation to hire a consultant to create a master plan for the revitalization. The plan would have three phases: the first phase was to re-allocate the soccer fields to be more conducive to soccer play, to add parking spaces, and to build a state-of-the-art skatepark. The second phase would see the creation of a vibrant playground for young people and adults alike, and the third phase would focus on the addition of a spectacular splash pad.
A STATE-OF-THE-ART SKATEPARK

Our “Skatepark story” exemplifies how a community foundation works to make great things happen locally, with its hands-on, local focus and its agility as a funding resource and community partner. The Skatepark Group had been formed by community members who wanted to see a new skatepark built in Campbellford. They were in their fifth year of fundraising but needed help to take their fundraising efforts to the next level. That is where a Community Foundation can really help, and we are happy to have been able to support the skatepark project in several ways.


In 2009, the Municipality of Trent Hills and the Community Foundation agreed and made a first-ever strategic fundraising decision to provide matching grant funds from the Municipal Fund and the Community Fund, with all funds raised going to the Skatepark. This meant that for every dollar, three dollars were raised. With the matching funds arrangement, the Skatepark Group was able to raise $375,333.46 and fully meet the cost of the Skatepark.


The stunning Skateboard Park was completed in 2009, and at the Grand Opening on September 26 of that year, it drew praise for its beautiful and imaginative design. With a street area of 3,850 square feet and a 2,550 square foot bowl, our Skatepark has been described as “a feast for the eyes…not to mention the wheels.” Jim Barnum, President of Spectrum Skatepark Creations Ltd., went on to say that Campbellford could very well be home to Canada's most unique skatepark bowl. While small, it’s packed with enough features that it has drawn the attention of dedicated “rippers” from Toronto to Ottawa.

THREE PLAYGROUNDS AND FITNESS PARKS IN ONE DAY!

Phase Two of the Kennedy Revitalization Project focused on building playgrounds and fitness parks across three communities. The Community Foundation formed the Trent Hills Playground and Fitness Park Committee with volunteers from each of the three communities. By engaging each of our amalgamated communities we were able to focus on bridging our rural gaps and inspire grassroots community spirit.


We applied to the Let Them Be Kids organization on behalf of the community, and subsequently received an award for 50% of the funding to build the three new playgrounds and the three outdoor adult fitness parks in the three amalgamated communities.

We also received a Kool-Aid Award, one of only 10 in Canada, which provided a further $5,000 towards the equipment. Committee members organized 22 fundraisers and obtained cash and in-kind donations from businesses, service organizations and individuals in the community. In summary, our communities came together with over 250 donations and four grants.


Our “Community Build Day” was held on September 4th, 2010. Our playground and fitness park phase was completed with help from three hundred community volunteers, no less!

MAKING A SPLASH FOR OUR CHILDREN

The third and final phase of the Kennedy Park Revitalization Project, the construction of the Splash Pad started in the fall of 2011. The Campbellford Seymour Foundation and the Municipality of Trent Hills committed $100,000 each in the form of a matching grant for all donations, which meant that for every dollar, three dollars were actually raised. In fact, we raised and matched over $128,000 and as a result the Splash Pad is named the Campbellford/Seymour Community Foundation Splash Pad.


A Dotmocracy Process at the 5 Trent Hills public schools involved all students. Students voted with coloured dots to pick their favourite Splash Pad Component:

  • Hillcrest Public School chose Daisy Mae
  • St. Mary Catholic Elementary chose the Rainbow
  • Kent Public School chose the Cat Tail
  • Hastings Public School chose Froggie-O
  • Percy Centennial Public School chose the Crow’s Nest
FINISHING TOUCHES

The finishing touches for the park included:

  • Four signs were installed to high-light donors and supporters of each of the 3 Phases of the project as well as tell the Kennedy Park Story.
  • Three Benches were installed through donations from Hillcrest Public School with proceeds from their Annual Festival of Trees Event, Nick and Paula Meier and Hugh and Gloria McClure.
  • 14 Trees were purchased and dedicated in honour of, or in memory of, loved ones.
  • 12” x 12” bricks and 6” x 12” bricks purchased by families, businesses, community groups surround the CSCF 10th Anniversary Continuum Bench.
  • Through a 2nd year award of 50% grant funding from Let Them Be Kids, garbage receptacles, a bike rack and the continuum bench were added to the park.
  • Three shade shelters and accessible picnic tables were also added a year later.

THE CONTINUUM BENCH

In celebration of our 10th Anniversary in the community, the Community Foundation purchased a “continuum bench,” the first of its kind in Canada. The bricks that surround the bench depict donor support for the revitalization project. Some donors purchases trees and benches, which are adorned with dedication plaques. This unique bench will provide a welcoming, pleasant spot for family and friends to spend time, enjoy each other’s company, and maybe tell a story or two.

With the completion of the Splash Pad, the Kennedy Park Revitalization Project is now finished. We continue to be inspired by the members of our community who provided gifts and who participated in this extraordinary revitalization project that spans three communities. This has truly been a community success story!

Northumberland Land Trust Endowment Fund

Preserving Northumberland County - one acre at a time.
Mission:

The Northumberland Land Trust is committed to preserving the natural, historical and cultural heritage of Northumberland County. Their mandate is to establish, maintain and manage protected areas.

As a charity, the Land Trust can…

  • accept donations of land
  • fundraise to secure and manage selected properties
  • enter into conservation agreements for the permanent protection of natural landscapes, forests, farms and waterways
  • provide public education and information on land conservation tools.

The Land Trust is governed by a volunteer board of directors representing a cross section of the community including landowners, farmers, business people and professionals.

A Permanent Endowment Fund

This is the first Agency Endowment Fund to be set up with the Community Foundation. By establishing their own fund, the Northumberland Land Trust now has a permanent source of funding for their organization. They benefit from knowing a trusted organization is managing their Fund so they can concentrate on their mission - preserving Northumberland County.

Anyone can donate to this endowment fund, and earnings from the fund will be distributed to Northumberland Land Trust on an annual basis for operational activities. The Foundation will issue a charitable receipt for all donations to the fund in accordance with the Income Tax Act.

Cyril, Anne and Bernard Murphy Scholarship Fund

The Community Foundation was the recipient of a gift of $636,376.71 from the Estate of Bernard Murphy in 2021. Through a bequest in his Last Will and Testament, the Cyril, Anne and Bernard Murphy Scholarship Fund has been created to support graduating students attending one of the two Cobourg high schools – Cobourg Collegiate Institute (CCI) and St. Mary’s Catholic Secondary School (SMCSS).

An annual award is presented to one student from each Cobourg high school who is enrolled and accepted in a full-time Canadian post-secondary education program in the area of arts, science, medical or theatre/drama. The students will be chosen annually by each school’s administration. The initial scholarship amount of $2,000 is to be adjusted for inflation at 2% per annum starting from 2010.

This gift exemplifies Bernard’s generous spirit and his wish to ensure that the causes he valued in life continue to receive support long after he is gone. Young people are the future of our communities, and investing in our youth ensures that they succeed and thrive, and become self-sufficient, productive and the best versions of themselves.

His gift, named in memory of his parents, Cyril and Anne, will continue to provide generous support of the educational endeavors of local students and will be a lasting legacy.

Scholarships reward students hard work, recognize need and support dreams.

Harold (Hank) Leith Willis Memorial Scholarship Fund

Friends and family have generously donated funds to establish the Harold (Hank) Leith Willis Memorial Scholarship Fund, in his memory.

Hank was always a strong believer in the value of education in all its diverse forms and believed that volunteerism and community involvement was both a privilege and a responsibility for all community members. His life was a living testament to this belief. Hank was a member of the Steering Committee for the establishment of the Community Foundation and served as its charter President for 2 years. He was also involved in the early planning for the Aron Theatre Cooperative and the proposed Multi-Use Recreational Facillity for Campbellford.

This award will be presented annually to a student graduating from Campbellford District High School who is pursuing post-secondary education. The successful candidate shall have two or more of the following criteria to be eligible for the scholarship:

    • Demonstrate community involvement inside and outside the school community
    • An A- or B+ grade average (not the highest mark)
    • A volunteer in the community, a leader that gets involved on their own volition
    • May enter into social services or education as a career

Glover Family Fund

The Glover family, Steven and Patty, who reside in Canmore, Alberta, and their son, Russill, who resides in Burnaby, BC, set up this fund in 2021, through a gift of securities, to provide annual grants to organizations and initiatives that support social service projects and programs in Trent Hills. Steven said “Our family believes in the long-term benefits of endowments to provide support to charitable causes”. Steven worries that “many factors are creating challenges for some families currently and these challenges will escalate as the economy, the environment, the job market and the cost of living are impacted by a variety of global issues”.

This is not their first contribution to a philanthropic family legacy. They have previously established Glover Family Funds in each community that has been significant in their lives, the Edmonton Community Foundation and the Banff/Canmore Community Foundation. Steven has served on the Board of Directors and as Chair of the Audit and Finance/ Investment Committees for both of these community foundations.

Steve was born in Campbellford and grew up on the family farm near Warkworth. The Glover ancestors - his father Alec, grandfather Clarence, great-grandfather Walter (pictured) and great-great-grandfather David - have lived in Northumberland County since the 1850’s. HIs brothers David and Robert are 5th generation farmers in the County. The tradition continues as his niece Laura and nephew James partner with David as owner/operators of a large organic dairy operation. Steve’s other siblings, Nancy, Sara Jane and Scott also live in the County, Sadly his sister Janet passed away in 2020. Steve’s mother Joyce (nee Masterson) spent most of her early life in Campbellford living above the family’s general/grocery store on Bridge Street. Her parents, Bill and Thelma operated the Masterson store from 1942 until 1959. Patty too comes from a rural background, having grown up on the family farm west of Grande Prairie, Alberta. The Russill family, her father, uncles and grandfather originally from Bracebridge, Ontario, homesteaded in the Peace country in the 1920’s.

These multi-generational rural and small town roots underlie the Glover family commitment to community, neighbors looking after neighbors. Steve’s memories of the party line telephone of the 1950’s and 60’s symbolizes the importance of neighbors and that community spirit. He notes the irony that the world wide shortage of semi-conductor chips in 2021 drove a large increase in one of their investment holdings. This provided a tax efficient avenue to contribute to all three Family Funds in 2021. “Who would have imagined there could be a link between a 1950’s party line and the 2021 shortage of chips’ chuckles Steve. “I encourage everyone who can, to include charity as a component of year end tax planning - donating your winners should be considered along with the traditional focus on selling your losers”. Both Steve and Patty are Chartered Accountants so this emphasis on planning and tax efficiency is not surprising.

As noted, the Fund was set up with a gift of securities, which is one of the most tax effective ways to give because they are exempt from capital gains tax. The Glovers received a charitable donation receipt for the fair market value of the securities. The family was able to choose a community cause to support, one that had real meaning for their family. This gift, which connects family generations, will have an impact that lasts beyond their lifetime and will contribute to making our community a better place.

Joseph Rudolf Marth Memorial Scholarship Fund

Through memorial donations from Joe’s family and friends, Martha Murphy, spouse of the Late Joseph Rudolf Marth, created the “Joseph Rudolf Marth Memorial Scholarship Fund” in loving memory and to honour our “Funny Guy” Joe (Joey).
 
Joe was a McMaster University graduate and a very successful Radio Personality under the name of Joey Martin. Joe was an accomplished Voice Actor under the name of the Human Cartoon; his specialty was animation and he enjoyed national and international successes. Joe will be remembered as sharing his wonderful GIFT of LAUGHTER with those he met…..thereby leaving our world a better place!

This award will be presented annually to a student nominated by their peers and/or teachers, graduating from Campbellford District High School, and can be used for post-secondary education or an apprenticeship program. The student(s) nominated will demonstrate Joe’s signature trait of making people laugh, have a huge amount of confidence, and include everyone in sharing the laughter. This student will have contributed to the overall “upbeat and positive atmosphere” of the school community. 
 
A request for nominations will be communicated to staff and graduating students at Campbellford District High School in early spring of each year. A student and/or teacher may submit a nomination form for more than one fellow GRADUATING student. Self-nominations are not accepted.

Environmental Endowment Fund

The Campbellford/Seymour community has a rich natural heritage. It is located within a unique natural ecosystem, characterized by picturesque landscapes, diverse biological species and energetic people. 

The Environmental Endowment Fund was created to promote and support environmental stewardship and sustainable living in the Campbellford/Seymour area through a grant program. In 2018, the Community Foundation initiated the Environmental Fund Mini Grant and awarded its first grant of $500 to Hillcrest Public School to construct a native pollinator habitat on the school grounds. An annual $500 grant is available to local organizations through this grant program.

Ontario Endowment for Children & Youth in Recreation Fund

In 1999 The Ministry of Citizenship, Culture and Recreation established a "Matching Funds" program to create permanent endowments for the benefit of Children and Youth in community recreation.

In 2001 Community Foundation set aside $50,000.00 of its newly acquired funds to be used for this program. The Ministry of Citizenship, Culture and Recreation then provided a grant of $46,471.95.

The Ontario Endowment for Children & Youth in Recreation Fund is available for grants to qualified donees for recreational projects and programs for children and youth in the Campbellford/Seymour community. Community Recreation includes sport, recreation, fitness, youth leadership, camping and outdoor education, play groups, the arts and cultural activities.

The Community Foundation accepts donations to this fund from those interested in supporting youth programs in Campbellford/Seymour.

2025

The Friends of the Campbellford/Seymour Library received a $5,000 grant, with $3,500 of the funding coming from the OECYR Fund, for the Library Courtyard Restoration Project.

Hillcrest Public School, in partnership with KPRDSB, received a $5,000 grant, with $3,504 coming from the OECYR Fund, to purchase the National Archery in Schools Program.

Artworth Trent Hills Art Camp, in partnership with Innresponse, received a $4,760 Job Opportunity for Youth Grant, to hire two students as Assistant Camp Coordinators. 

The total granted from the OECYR Fund in 2025 was $11,764.00.

2022 - 2024

2021

Campbellford District High School, in partnership with KPRDSB, received a grant of $2,856 to upgrade their volleyball equipment.

2020

The Rotary Club of Campbellford received a $4,000 grant, with $3,500 of the funding coming from the OECYR Fund, for the installation of an accessible swing at Kennedy Park.

2019

Campbellford District High School, in partnership with KPRDSB, received a $3,000 grant for their football program.

2018

A Mini Grant Program was initiated, with applicants applying for funding for projects from our established "Field of Interest" Funds, this fund being one of them. Campbellford District High School received two Children & Youth in Recreation mini grants - $1,000 to purchase a squat rack for their exercise room, and $2,000 to purchase a protable event tent. Hillcrest Public School received $1,775 to update their indoor volleyball nets and poles.

2017

Campbellford Minor Hockey Association, in partnership with the Municipality of Trent Hills, received a $4,000.00 grant to purchase new hockey jerseys.

2015

A $15,000.00 grant was awarded to the Municipality of Trent Hills to purchase youth sports equipment for the new Field House in Hastings.

A $1,000.00 HATCH grant was awarded to both Kent Public School and St. Mary Catholic Elementary School to replace old, damaged and missing sports equipment.

2014

Hillcrest Public School received a $5,000.00 grant to refurbish their baseball diamond.

2008 - 2013, 2016

No projects were funded.

2007

Campbellford District High School received $3,000.00 as part of a $15,000.00 grant to re-establish the football program.

$2,000.00 was granted to the Campbellford & District Curling and Racquet Club as part of a $4,670.00 grant to purchase curling stones for the youth curling program.

Hillcrest Public School was granted $5,000.00 as part of a $10,000.00 grant for a playground renewal project.

2006

Kent Public School received $5,000.00 to refurbish their baseball diamond.

2005

Hillcrest Public School received $2000.00 as part of a $8,500.00 grant to purchase musical instruments for the school.

Kent Public School received $2,000.00 as part of a $4,800.00 grant to refurbish playground equipment to comply with safety standards.

The Chamber of Commerce Santa Claus Parade Fund received $1,000.00 as part of a $3,500.00 grant to refurbish the Santa Clause parade float and purchase a new Santa suit.

2004

$5,000.00 was granted to Campbellford District High School to fund the rejuventation of the High School's soccer field.

Campbellford/Seymour Agricultural Society received $968.00 as part of a $6,000.00 grant to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Campbellford fair.

$2,000.00 was granted to Kent Public School to fund the planting of 8 new shade trees on the school grounds.

Arts & Culture Fund

The creation of an Endowment Fund with the Community Foundation, called The Northumberland Arts and Crafts Association, Jan & Evert Scheidt Fund was celebrated on National Philanthropy Day, November 15, 2006 with a Wine and Cheese party held in the conference room at the new Community Living Campbellford/Brighton location in downtown Campbellford.

Anne Linton, President of the Northumberland Arts & Crafts Association announced the closing of its operation after 28 years of service to the community. Over the years, the Association donated the net profits from their craft shows, over $78,000.00, back to the community, concentrating on supporting Arts & Culture in the area.

Anne remarked "As we were winding up our business, we found that we had a surplus of funds for which we had to find a place. After researching possible recipients, the Campbellford/Seymour Community Foundation showed us a way to use this money to continue to give back to the community in perpetuity. By setting up a special endowment fund we are able to specify that the interest from the fund can be earmarked for those applications that pertain to the arts. This was the perfect answer for our organization. We could wind down our activities and yet still be able to meet our mandate."

CSCF President, Cathy Redden, said "We are pleased and honoured that the Northumberland Arts and Crafts Association have established this endowment fund with the Community Foundation. What this fund will contribute to the Community in the future will be representative of the good work that has been accomplished by the association in the past." This is the first endowment fund from a Community Organization and very appropriate on National Philanthropy Day.

In 2018 the Community Foundation initiated the Arts & Culture Mini Grant, and the first $500 grant was awarded to Hillcrest Public School to repair their band instruments. This grant was funded from the Northumberland Arts & Crafts, Jan & Evert Scheidt Fund, and each year a $500 grant is available through our grant program.
