Glover Family Fund - Social Service Grant Guidelines

The Glover Family Fund provides grants to organizations and initiatives that support social service projects or programs in Trent Hills.


Projects that qualify for social service grants typically aim to improve the well-being of underserved or vulnerable populations. These may include initiatives focused on:

  • Poverty alleviation;
  • Mental health support;
  • Housing assistance;
  • Food security;
  • Education access;
  • Services for seniors, youth, or people with disabilities.

 

They may also include programs that:

  • Promote community development;
  • Reduce social isolation;
  • Provide crisis intervention—such as domestic violence shelters or addiction recovery services.

 

To be eligible, projects need to demonstrate measurable impact, community involvement, and alignment with the community foundation’s purposes.

The Kennedy Park Project

The Revitalization of Kennedy Park began in 2008, when the Municipality of Trent Hills received a Municipal Fund grant from the Community Foundation to hire a consultant to create a master plan for the revitalization. The plan would have three phases: the first phase was to re-allocate the soccer fields to be more conducive to soccer play, to add parking spaces, and to build a state-of-the-art skatepark. The second phase would see the creation of a vibrant playground for young people and adults alike, and the third phase would focus on the addition of a spectacular splash pad.
A STATE-OF-THE-ART SKATEPARK

Our “Skatepark story” exemplifies how a community foundation works to make great things happen locally, with its hands-on, local focus and its agility as a funding resource and community partner. The Skatepark Group had been formed by community members who wanted to see a new skatepark built in Campbellford. They were in their fifth year of fundraising but needed help to take their fundraising efforts to the next level. That is where a Community Foundation can really help, and we are happy to have been able to support the skatepark project in several ways.


In 2009, the Municipality of Trent Hills and the Community Foundation agreed and made a first-ever strategic fundraising decision to provide matching grant funds from the Municipal Fund and the Community Fund, with all funds raised going to the Skatepark. This meant that for every dollar, three dollars were raised. With the matching funds arrangement, the Skatepark Group was able to raise $375,333.46 and fully meet the cost of the Skatepark.


The stunning Skateboard Park was completed in 2009, and at the Grand Opening on September 26 of that year, it drew praise for its beautiful and imaginative design. With a street area of 3,850 square feet and a 2,550 square foot bowl, our Skatepark has been described as “a feast for the eyes…not to mention the wheels.” Jim Barnum, President of Spectrum Skatepark Creations Ltd., went on to say that Campbellford could very well be home to Canada's most unique skatepark bowl. While small, it’s packed with enough features that it has drawn the attention of dedicated “rippers” from Toronto to Ottawa.

THREE PLAYGROUNDS AND FITNESS PARKS IN ONE DAY!

Phase Two of the Kennedy Revitalization Project focused on building playgrounds and fitness parks across three communities. The Community Foundation formed the Trent Hills Playground and Fitness Park Committee with volunteers from each of the three communities. By engaging each of our amalgamated communities we were able to focus on bridging our rural gaps and inspire grassroots community spirit.


We applied to the Let Them Be Kids organization on behalf of the community, and subsequently received an award for 50% of the funding to build the three new playgrounds and the three outdoor adult fitness parks in the three amalgamated communities.

We also received a Kool-Aid Award, one of only 10 in Canada, which provided a further $5,000 towards the equipment. Committee members organized 22 fundraisers and obtained cash and in-kind donations from businesses, service organizations and individuals in the community. In summary, our communities came together with over 250 donations and four grants.


Our “Community Build Day” was held on September 4th, 2010. Our playground and fitness park phase was completed with help from three hundred community volunteers, no less!

MAKING A SPLASH FOR OUR CHILDREN

The third and final phase of the Kennedy Park Revitalization Project, the construction of the Splash Pad started in the fall of 2011. The Campbellford Seymour Foundation and the Municipality of Trent Hills committed $100,000 each in the form of a matching grant for all donations, which meant that for every dollar, three dollars were actually raised. In fact, we raised and matched over $128,000 and as a result the Splash Pad is named the Campbellford/Seymour Community Foundation Splash Pad.


A Dotmocracy Process at the 5 Trent Hills public schools involved all students. Students voted with coloured dots to pick their favourite Splash Pad Component:

  • Hillcrest Public School chose Daisy Mae
  • St. Mary Catholic Elementary chose the Rainbow
  • Kent Public School chose the Cat Tail
  • Hastings Public School chose Froggie-O
  • Percy Centennial Public School chose the Crow’s Nest
FINISHING TOUCHES

The finishing touches for the park included:

  • Four signs were installed to high-light donors and supporters of each of the 3 Phases of the project as well as tell the Kennedy Park Story.
  • Three Benches were installed through donations from Hillcrest Public School with proceeds from their Annual Festival of Trees Event, Nick and Paula Meier and Hugh and Gloria McClure.
  • 14 Trees were purchased and dedicated in honour of, or in memory of, loved ones.
  • 12” x 12” bricks and 6” x 12” bricks purchased by families, businesses, community groups surround the CSCF 10th Anniversary Continuum Bench.
  • Through a 2nd year award of 50% grant funding from Let Them Be Kids, garbage receptacles, a bike rack and the continuum bench were added to the park.
  • Three shade shelters and accessible picnic tables were also added a year later.

THE CONTINUUM BENCH

In celebration of our 10th Anniversary in the community, the Community Foundation purchased a “continuum bench,” the first of its kind in Canada. The bricks that surround the bench depict donor support for the revitalization project. Some donors purchases trees and benches, which are adorned with dedication plaques. This unique bench will provide a welcoming, pleasant spot for family and friends to spend time, enjoy each other’s company, and maybe tell a story or two.

With the completion of the Splash Pad, the Kennedy Park Revitalization Project is now finished. We continue to be inspired by the members of our community who provided gifts and who participated in this extraordinary revitalization project that spans three communities. This has truly been a community success story!

    • Membership-based organizations providing services and programming in support of advancing individual or organizational development capacity and promoting an awareness of the arts
    • Contributing to community participation, arts education and public involvement in the arts in Campbellford/Seymour
  • Heritage Organizations:

Job Opportunity for Youth Grant Program

In an effort to address the specific community need of youth employment, a NEW grant opportunity was developed in 2012. The Job Opportunity for Youth (JOY) initiative provides charitable and not‐for‐profit organizations with grant funding to hire a youth from their community for a placement within their organization.

The grants aim to support organizations in achieving some or all of the following goals:

    • Provide quality work experience for youth;
    • Provide opportunities for youth to develop and improve their skills to assist with future employability;
      to learn about charitable and not‐for‐profit organizations
    • Engage youth through meaningful participation and sustained involvement;
    • Provide opportunities for youth to build connections with other employers;
    • Provide organizations an opportunity to share knowledge through supervising and mentoring a youth.

The Community Foundation expects that through these Job Opportunity for Youth grants, charitable and not‐for‐profit organizations can have a greater impact on our community. We know that these groups strive to meet the changing needs of our community by improving the quality of life for all residents.

Job Opportunity for Youth grants are available to organizations that support the Campbellford/Seymour community, with grant funding allocated from our Campbellford/Seymour Community Fund.  JOY grants are also available to organizations serving Northumberland County beyond Campbellford/Seymour, with grant funding allocated from the Northumberland County Fund.

As of 2025, 91 students have had the benefit of gaining on the job experience through this grant initiative, at these local organizations:

Applications for Environmental Mini Grants should promote and support environmental stewardship and sustainable living in the Campbellford/Seymour area.

    • information and educational materials that provide public information on water quality issues and solutions
    • personal lifestyle choices that maintain and enhance local water quality and quantity.
  • Landscape Protection - for projects that support efforts to maintain, increase and enhance the amount of land in Campbellford/ Seymour that is protected for environmental purposes:
    • parks, conservation areas, natural habitat areas, etc. and public access to such areas
    • support for the protection of wildlife populations and habitats especially those with species at risk
    • support for efforts to maintain and enhance appropriate access to natural areas for low impact recreation and nature study/ observation activities, and related information and educational materials.

Northumberland Land Trust Endowment Fund

Preserving Northumberland County - one acre at a time.
Mission:

The Northumberland Land Trust is committed to preserving the natural, historical and cultural heritage of Northumberland County. Their mandate is to establish, maintain and manage protected areas.

As a charity, the Land Trust can…

  • accept donations of land
  • fundraise to secure and manage selected properties
  • enter into conservation agreements for the permanent protection of natural landscapes, forests, farms and waterways
  • provide public education and information on land conservation tools.

The Land Trust is governed by a volunteer board of directors representing a cross section of the community including landowners, farmers, business people and professionals.

A Permanent Endowment Fund

This is the first Agency Endowment Fund to be set up with the Community Foundation. By establishing their own fund, the Northumberland Land Trust now has a permanent source of funding for their organization. They benefit from knowing a trusted organization is managing their Fund so they can concentrate on their mission - preserving Northumberland County.

Anyone can donate to this endowment fund, and earnings from the fund will be distributed to Northumberland Land Trust on an annual basis for operational activities. The Foundation will issue a charitable receipt for all donations to the fund in accordance with the Income Tax Act.

Cyril, Anne and Bernard Murphy Scholarship Fund

The Community Foundation was the recipient of a gift of $636,376.71 from the Estate of Bernard Murphy in 2021. Through a bequest in his Last Will and Testament, the Cyril, Anne and Bernard Murphy Scholarship Fund has been created to support graduating students attending one of the two Cobourg high schools – Cobourg Collegiate Institute (CCI) and St. Mary’s Catholic Secondary School (SMCSS).

An annual award is presented to one student from each Cobourg high school who is enrolled and accepted in a full-time Canadian post-secondary education program in the area of arts, science, medical or theatre/drama. The students will be chosen annually by each school’s administration. The initial scholarship amount of $2,000 is to be adjusted for inflation at 2% per annum starting from 2010.

This gift exemplifies Bernard’s generous spirit and his wish to ensure that the causes he valued in life continue to receive support long after he is gone. Young people are the future of our communities, and investing in our youth ensures that they succeed and thrive, and become self-sufficient, productive and the best versions of themselves.

His gift, named in memory of his parents, Cyril and Anne, will continue to provide generous support of the educational endeavors of local students and will be a lasting legacy.

Scholarships reward students hard work, recognize need and support dreams.

Harold (Hank) Leith Willis Memorial Scholarship Fund

Friends and family have generously donated funds to establish the Harold (Hank) Leith Willis Memorial Scholarship Fund, in his memory.

Hank was always a strong believer in the value of education in all its diverse forms and believed that volunteerism and community involvement was both a privilege and a responsibility for all community members. His life was a living testament to this belief. Hank was a member of the Steering Committee for the establishment of the Community Foundation and served as its charter President for 2 years. He was also involved in the early planning for the Aron Theatre Cooperative and the proposed Multi-Use Recreational Facillity for Campbellford.

This award will be presented annually to a student graduating from Campbellford District High School who is pursuing post-secondary education. The successful candidate shall have two or more of the following criteria to be eligible for the scholarship:

    • Demonstrate community involvement inside and outside the school community
    • An A- or B+ grade average (not the highest mark)
    • A volunteer in the community, a leader that gets involved on their own volition
    • May enter into social services or education as a career
